h1. strongSwan Installation Documentation

h2. Live testing system

We have built a small test system to run strongSwan without installation or configuration. It is based on a UML kernel, two small "OpenWRT":http://openwrt.org/ images and should run on any x86 Linux system out of the box.

h2. Distribution packages

There are currently packages for:
* "Debian":http://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=strongswan&searchon=names&suite=all&section=all
* "Ubuntu":http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=strongswan&searchon=names&suite=all&section=all
* "openSUSE":http://software.opensuse.org/search?p=1&q=strongswan
* "Gentoo":http://packages.gentoo.org/package/net-misc/strongswan
* "Maemo":http://maemo.org/packages/view/strongswan/

h2. Compile yourself

h3. Linux Kernel requirements

strongSwan should run on most distros' kernels. If you build your own kernel, include the required modules.

h3. Building strongSwan

We have changed the build system to autotools for the 4.x releases.

There is a growing list of [[Autoconf|autoconf autoconf options available:

* [[Autoconf|Autoconf Autoconf options for 4.5 releases (current)
* Autoconf options for 4.4 releases
* Autoconf options for 4.3 releases
* Autoconf options for 4.2 releases
* Autoconf options for 4.1 releases

Refer to the list of plugins to learn more about the plugins that can be enabled with the above options.

The build procedure is as with any autotools project:

# "Download strongSwan":http://www.strongswan.org/download.html:
<pre>
wget http://download.strongswan.org/strongswan-4.x.x.tar.bz2
</pre>
# Unpack the tarball:
<pre>
tar xjvf strongswan-4.x.x.tar.bz2; cd strongswan-4.x.x
</pre>
# Configure strongSwan using some of the options above:
<pre>
./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --<your-options>
</pre>
# Build the sources and install the binaries as root:
<pre>
make
sudo make install
</pre>

h3. Building strongSwan on other platforms

* strongSwan on FreeBSD (IKEv2 only)
* strongSwan on Mac OS X (IKEv2 only)
* strongSwan on Android (IKEv2 only)
