Added by Ilgiz Absalyamov over 8 years ago. Updated over 8 years ago.

Status:
Closed
Priority:
Normal
Category:
testing
Affected version:
5.0.3
Resolution:
Invalid

Description

While installing kvm:
...
Configuring qemu-kvm (1.1.2+dfsg-6) …
[FAIL] Your system does not have the CPU extensions required to use KVM. Not doing anything. ... failed!
...
Then, while running ./make-testing:
root@debian:~# tail -4 /srv/strongswan-testing/build/testing.log
virsh create /root/strongswan/testing/config/kvm/alice.xml
error: Failed to create domain from /root/strongswan/testing/config/kvm/alice.xml
error: unknown OS type hvm

root@debian:~# cat /root/strongswan/testing/config/kvm/alice.xml | grep hvm
<type arch='x86_64' machine='pc'>hvm</type>

Is it that I don't use hardware virtualization?

We discussed this via IRC, using KVM within a VM might not work. For newer VMware products there might be a workaround but if that doesn't work there isn't much you can do. I'd recommend you run the testing environment on a physical host.

On a physical host you have to make sure VT-x/AMD-V is enabled in the BIOS.

Please fix this in documentation here: http://wiki.strongswan.org/projects/strongswan/wiki/TestingEnvironment

Thanks for the hint. I added a note about these requirements plus one regarding #326.

Tested with workaround in VMware ESXi 5.0.0.768111, and it works.
